Hi, I’m Xhey (xhey/they)
My name is pronounced: “Shay” as in Shea Butter
I am an Affrilachian & AfroIndigenous brown-skinned person who grew up on Nacotchtank/Anacostan land (colonized as Washington, DC). My family lives and labors in the southeast region of Turtle Island. We have specific ties to plantations and company towns throughout Appalachia and along the Atlantic coast.
I am autistic and autigender. Which means I experience gender fluidity in uniquely autistic ways—ways that are core to how I experience the world through all five senses. Being autigender and neuroexpansive™️ means I am a trans nonbinary person with hidden disabilities that uniquely prepare me for life. This also means that I have personal experience with specific cultural traumas, including the sensory overload of tenderheadedness.

The majority of my adult clients are Black, Trans, Queer, neuroexpansive, neurodivergent, autistic, and chronically ill.
The few exceptions still can check most of those boxes.
Black queer people with pronounced and/or hidden disabilities need affordable access to health care. Hair care is health care. Affordable access to comprehensive health services, including specialized hair care, is crucial for our overall well-being. I address the intersections between race, gender sexuality, and hair health care access by structuring my prices based on a living wage for me, and competitive rates for clients.
I structure appointments as full afternoon reservations so we can work on our own time—Crip Time—moving at a pace that makes sense for all of our bodies.
In addition to moving at a healthy pace, I am happy to design a treatment plan with a matching payment arrangement that accommodates your cash flow. With your sincere collaboration I can balance the urgency of your hair and scalp health, my financial responsibilities, and your capacity. I will not deliberately mislead clients about my prices. I expect clients not to mislead me about their budget.
Booking a consultation begins the treatment planning process. This is the best way to prepare for a successful client-stylist relationship that balances our different responsibilities & needs, rather than putting them in competition with one another.
The standard deposit is $33.
Deposits are not refundable. They can transfer once if you need to reschedule. If I need to reschedule, the deposit will always transfer. I will give you as much notice as I can if I need to reschedule. After forfeiting you second deposit (2 paid deposits with 2 reschedules each), you will have to pay 4 hours of labor in advance, plus add-ons (like detoxing), and not including the cost of additional hair. That amounts to a minimum of $132.
I am an anticapitalist hair artist. I want the hair healthcare you get from me to be as affordable as practicable. Whenever appropriate, I pass on savings I can access as a licensed professional to my clients. I accommodate smaller budgets by providing model call opportunities and payment plans.
These rates are subject to change to accommodate overhead costs and ethically compensate my labor at a living wage. My services are charged based on time, complexity, and intensity.
For instance, * IF * I ever provided microloc retwists, my rate would likely triple to $99/hour. Comparable install services are well over 40 hours long and cost thousands of dollars from people who aren’t disabled. Upon visiting my doctor about the pain from this service they discovered I have a whole autoimmune disorder, and made sure I cut the 10-month wait line to see a specialist. Flare ups induced by extreme repetitive labor manifest as tremors, an inability to move/use my hands/wrists/arms, and pain so bad it wakes me out of my sleep. I do not provide this service at this time for this reason. It is not fair to my body, or yours, to do what it’d take for me to provide a high quality result. The same goes for small boho knotless braids—it ain’t happenin’. Don’t ask.

To do this, choose the parent or child wash day add-on. I cannot provide comprehensive services to two people in one day. I highly recommend model calls and workshop opportunities to balance parent/child haircare needs. A great solution is organizing a workshop with a community group you belong to so folx can reap the benefits of witnessing your hair health consultation. Depending on the partner, I contribute in-kind donated materials to the budget of the workshop, such as with the upcoming children’s workshop at the North Durham Branch of the Durham County Library.
I do not have separate rates for children. However, I am open to double booking a parent and child to save money on the additional deposit and limit our time spent to one visit.
Services that involve intense physical labor usually require a $66 deposit.
All extension hair must be paid for in advance.
Respectability politics are constantly projected on me and my clients. It is hard to find a psychologically safe balance between authenticity and enforcing privacy boundaries. I provide gender affirming care so folx can move through the world satisfied with their appearance, confident that who they are matches how they are perceived.
